A Reggaetón Blast From The Past

A Reggaetón Blast From The Past

Today Skempi News takes a look back at the Reggaetón of 15 years ago. This was when Puerto Rican rapper Tego Calderón released his album El Abayarde. This Reggaetón album launched him into international stardom as the album went on to sell 300.000 copies worldwide (this despite heavy bootlegging due to its lack of availability) and helped revolutionize Reggaetón worldwide. In addition to this the album was also nominated for a Latin Grammy Award.

Born Tegui Calderón Rosario (1972), Tego Calderón went on to experiment with other styles after the success of El Abayarde. His next two albums The Underdog and El Abayarde Contraataca delved into Hip Hop and African music. But today Skempi is looking back at his fame as a Reggaetón powerhouse in 2003. One of the monster hits featured on El Abayarde was the single “Guasa Guasa” and it made many hips gyrate.
