Yraka is a Colombian singer-songwriter and agent of culture who expresses a deep admiration for women, his country, blissful happiness, life and God in his lyrics, which he envelops in a message of pure positivity. His musical style is steeped in traditional Colombian folklore with a tinge of international influences.
His given name is Fabián Navarro and even though he obtained a degree in culinary engineering at the University of Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano, he always knew music was his true passion and dedicated himself to singing and writing songs from a very young age.
He started his career making tropical music alongside renowned Colombian artists Mariano Cívico and Maelo Ruíz and continued in this genre for 15 years during which he became the member of many other tropical music groups. In 2008, however, he decided it was time to go solo and made a start in the genre of Merengue Urbano.
This has taken him to performances at some of the most prestigious festivals in Bogotá such as Festival de Teatro Bogotá 2008, Festival de Verano 2009, Gran Concierto LAUD Stereo 2010, Concierto Bicentenario 2010, La Feria Latinoamericano de Entretenimiento (Feel Expo) 2013, just to name a few. He was also a special guest at the Festival Manuelita Sanz in Quito, Ecuador in 2010.
So far Yraka has produced two albums. The first was a Gospel production released in 2004 and titled “Quiero Entregarme” (I want to surrender) and the second was a Merengue Urbano album titled “Bien Traga’o” (Swallowed Well, purely musical meaning) released in 2010.
The latter and its lead single of the same name proved to be his breakthrough in Colombia as it landed him appearances on many popular television shows on much viewed channels such as RCN and Canal 13 as well as stage performances. And the video for said single also found success on the channels Canal Mi Gente TV and Canal Claro.
Flash forward to 2013 and Yraka links up with José Antonio Burgos who would go on to become and continues to be the arranger, producer and musical director of his musical style. Burgos already had a vast supply of experience stemming from his ten year tenure at the helm of the musical direction of the Colombian folklore group Toto La Momposina y Sus Tambores, during which time he was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
Yraka has made good use of Burgos’s expertise and collaborated with him to create a mixture of Caribbean folklore from Colombia’s Caribbean region and Urban Latin percussions with a tinge of Disco music which spawned the musical concept “Latin Folk”.
And that is how the band Yraka y Los Del Barrio was born, of which the primary aim is to present the folklore sounds of Caribbean Colombia, i.e. “Tambora”, “Perillero”, “Chalupa”, “Garabato”, “Bullerengue”, “Cumbia”, and “Son Palenquero”, in a fresh and modern way to the next generation of the world.
With this fresh new sound and fresh new band in toe, Yraka would once again grace many prestigious stages, only this time as Yraka y Los Del Barrio. Between 2014 and 2015 they would perform at such venues as Feria Del Hogar, Feria de las Colonias, Festimúsica, La Caminata de la Solidaridad and the Gaira Café Cumbia House. They also came in 7th in crowd attendance among 48 participants at the Festival Colombia al Parque 2015. The sky is the limit for what they will achieve in the future.
In the meantime…
